Wequassett Resort and Golf Club

Route 28 On Pleasant Bay

Harwich, MA, USA

Style: Contemporary Classic

Atmosphere: Quiet

110 Rooms

According to many New England luxury travelers, this is Cape Cod’s top hotel, and when upscale Bostonians hit out for the coast, as often as not this is where they do it. Chatham, on the quaint little elbow of the Cape, is a classic, unspoiled seaside town, and the Wequassett Resort and Golf Club is the rambling little village resort we always dreamed we’d find there.

A classic 18th-century colonial house makes up the heart of the place, and the cottages cluster around, some with views of the lawn and gardens, others overlooking Pleasant Bay. The accommodations range from cozy little queen rooms in the cottages that range across the 20-acre grounds to a new batch of luxury rooms, with balconies and sweeping views of the waters of the bay. Even the most basic are decidedly high-end, however, with Molton Brown bath products and plush terry robes, and the timeless New England style provides a much-needed break from modernity.

Wequassett’s culinary offerings ensure that you don’t have to venture out on the town if you don’t want to; there’s a restaurant that’s much in demand, a fine casual bar and grill, and a poolside barbecue that might add a dimension to your idea of New England cuisine. Despite its name, Wequassett doesn’t have its own golf club; what it does offer is guest access to the members-only Cape Cod National Golf Club, right next door, as well as close proximity to two public courses. Tennis courts are available on-site, there’s a resident pro to tune up your game, and the nautical setting on Pleasant Bay makes for fine swimming, windsurfing and sailing.
