Staying at an upscale Tuscan villa no longer automatically means that you’ll be sleeping in an antique four-poster in a carefully weathered sponge-painted bedroom that’s trying to be both rustic and posh. The hilltop Villa Sassolini looks traditional from the outside, to be sure — the stone facade is classic Chianti — but the spacious interiors are comparatively unadorned, free of frescoes and ceramic pitchers.

The property’s ten suites, amply sized and done up in calm shades of beige, white, and chocolate, have been stripped of old-fashioned trappings. The décor is clean and angular, all smooth wood, crisp linens, and polished glass, though the vaulted beam ceilings are a constant reminder of the building’s original function. The look, elegant but not stuffy, contemporary but not avant-garde, continues through the villa’s public spaces, including a stylish, relaxed restaurant serving first-rate Tuscan cuisine with an excellent wine list.

A highlight of the modestly sized but well-maintained property is the rosemary- and lavender-edged swimming pool, where breakfast is served each morning. Surrounded by white chaise lounges and illuminated with lanterns by night, it looks out over the region’s famous vineyards. Sassolini is a sophisticated retreat that’s perhaps best suited to couples who want to get away from it all — those who want easy access to Siena could feel a bit isolated, while fashion-addicted guests find themselves close to a number of high-fashion outlet stores.
