Villa Mangiacane
Via Faltignano 4, San Casciano
Florence, Tuscany, Italy
Style: Traditional Elegance
Atmosphere: Quiet
26 Rooms
Set on a hillside just outside Florence, the Villa Mangiacane is the best of both worlds — the sort of Tuscan country-house escape that absolutely sells itself, along with easy access to one of the world’s great cultural capitals. It took some doing, as it was essentially in ruins, but the owner, a South African expat, painstakingly restored it to its original 16th-century splendor.
Plus some modern additions, of course. These days it’s managed by the same international group responsible for places like Amsterdam’s College Hotel and Château Eza in the south of France. The result means the villa’s Renaissance atmosphere comes with professional service and luxury-hotel must-haves like plasma TVs and swanky marble bathrooms. Some of the better rooms have private gardens with plunge pools, and the split-level suites have terraces with views and in one case a jacuzzi tub.
Twenty-six rooms is certainly on the intimate side, but you won’t have to forego many big-hotel services; the Villa’s executive chef keeps the cuisine in fine form, and the Nadushka Spa comes complete with indoor pool, steam and sauna, and even a small fitness room. Fifteen minutes’ drive gets you to Florence, and even better, fifteen minutes’ drive gets you back here at the end of the day.
