The town of Gramado is a singular stop along the aptly named Rota Romantica, a collection of small, picturesque towns that dot the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. A historically multicultural place, Gramado offers some strange and wonderful bits of off-kilter scenery, including a dense forest of pines imported from Germany’s Black Forest. Overlooking all of this curious beauty is the Varanda das Bromélias, a modern take on the country estate, perched on a hillside at the edge of town.

With seventeen rooms and a lot of space to work with, architect Fernando Ely had free reign to indulge several different styles, combining cheeky, vibrant furniture with plenty of exposed wood and vaulted ceilings. This kind of urbanity imposed on a semi-isolated retreat injects some fun into the proceedings and keeps the décor from feeling too programmatic. Each guest room opens out onto a private balcony, and the larger Refuge suites feature an entire wall of glass to bring guests even closer to the surrounding greenery.
