Treetops

351 Kearoa Road, Horohoro

Rotorua, New Zealand

Style: Contemporary Classic

Atmosphere: Secluded

14 Rooms

Deep in an ancient forest overlooking Lake Rotorua, on more than two thousand acres of game reserve, Treetops is as close to Eden as any of us are likely to get. Outdoorsmen, particularly, are in paradise — the area around Rotorua is the trout fishing capital of the world, and the sheer concentration of wildlife is astonishing; if a photo safari or a birding expedition is your thing, you’ve come to the right place.

Of course guests at Treetops are hardly roughing it. The Lodge is nothing if not luxurious, from the hand-carved beams holding up the Great Room’s ceiling to the leather sofas and rich wood paneling in the fire-lit library. The Lodge building is home to four of the suites, all muted contemporary chic with sprawling beds and spa baths, and all four share the Lodge Wing’s lounge and kitchen. For more space and privacy, there are eight villas scattered about the grounds, each with fireplace, spa bath, and a private lounge and full kitchen.

New Zealand is also justifiably famous for a flowering culinary tradition — top chefs are drawn by the quality of life (and the plentiful job opportunities) and the wealth of top-notch local ingredients. Treetops is no exception, serving local game and produce accompanied by the finest domestic wines in the relaxed environment of the Lodge’s dining room.

A complete list of activities would strain our space limitations — suffice to say that virtually anything that can be done outdoors can be done here. From hiking, sailing or fly fishing to archery, kayaking and even hunting, all of Rotorua’s natural charms are at your doorstep.

How to get there:

Treetops is approximately a 15 to 20 minute drive from Rotorua Regional Airport.
