File this one under city/country. The Tiara Château Hôtel Mont Royal Chantilly is a gorgeous 18th-century palace on a hilltop surrounded by scenic woodlands, a postcard vision of aristocratic country life. But the Chantilly Forest is just a half-hour north of Paris, which obviously makes the Tiara Château an easy weekend escape, or even a dinner break, for Parisians — and when you pass Charles de Gaulle airport you’re halfway there, a geographic fact which accounts for the Tiara’s out-of-town and international visitors.

However pastoral the setting, there’s nothing rustic about the Tiara’s interiors. It’s all royal splendor from bottom to top, from the simplest double room to the Royale suite. It’s a thoroughly modern luxury hotel, beneath the surface — this close to Paris a hotel’s physical and technological standards must be high — but what’s modern about the Tiara is hidden away beneath a very convincing 18th-century veneer.

The old ballroom is now the site of L’Opéra, the hotel’s fine dining restaurant, and the castle’s old smokehouse is now home to the Stradivarius Bar, the stylish lounge, which, with its paneled wood walls and brick-lined fireplace, is probably the only place in the Tiara where a bit of woodsy atmosphere intervenes.
