If there’s a North American city that suffers from a PR problem it’s got to be Toronto. It’s livable, vibrant, creative, multicultural, not all that cold, and it’s gritty and urban enough, in spots, to stand in for New York in countless film and TV productions. So why is it not generally regarded to be a more exciting place? Maybe it’s just a well-kept secret — but in any case, the opening of the Thompson Toronto ought to nudge the city’s hip quotient up a notch or two.

This is the downtown Manhattan boutique brand that’s recently spread uptown and then across America. For a location they’ve chosen King West Village, one of the city’s hottest neighborhoods. And for a designer they’ve again settled on Studio Gaia, the partnership behind DC’s mod-retro Donovan House. Here they’ve delivered a look that’s perhaps a bit brighter and sunnier than the Thompson norm, though certainly no less stylish.

Offerings include a swimming pool and a rooftop bar, plus no fewer than three restaurants — a modern reinterpretation of a diner, a high-end Italian restaurant, and a sushi bar. Did we say multicultural? It’s proof positive that Toronto need feel no anxiety about its place in the world — in any town you care to name, this Thompson would be among the hippest of hotels.
