The Surrey

20 East 76th Street

New York City, NY, USA

Neighborhood: Manhattan - Upper East Side

Style: Modern Design

Atmosphere: Lively

190 Rooms

The Surrey pretty well puts to bed any notions of the design-oriented boutique hotel being in any way a downtown phenomenon. Manhattan’s Upper East Side is known for conservative interiors, conservative architecture, and a conservative crowd, but a closer look at the newly renovated Surrey — and the clever, subtle work of the designer, Lauren Rottet — reveals that there’s a bit more to it than that.

In its basic contours the Surrey is still classic Upper East Side, though perhaps a bit brighter, a bit sunnier than the norm — it’s only on closer inspection that Rottet’s artistic flourishes reveal themselves. The rooms and suites are genuinely spacious, not just “spacious-for-New-York,” many of the rooms equipped with terraces, gas fireplaces or soaking tubs, some suites adding kitchens and dining tables.

So far, so good, more than adequate for lodging the Upper East Side’s demanding customers, especially with the addition of the stylish monochrome spa space. What pushes the Surrey over the line from quite nice to absolutely essential is its common space (one hesitates to say “public”). Café Boulud is Daniel Boulud’s French-American restaurant, already highly acclaimed, and the rooftop’s English-style garden is one of upper Manhattan’s most magical lounge spaces, delightfully unpretentious yet, owing to its clientele, always elegant.
