76 Rooms

Of all the eras in New York’s history, there’s little doubt that the early 20th century is the most treasured. “Prewar” is the most desirable word in a real estate listing. And it’s this to era that midtown’s brand-new Chatwal aims to pay homage, in a turn-of-the-century building by Stanford White that’s been freshly decked out in a painstaking re-creation of Thirties Art Deco.

It’s the sort of place where you can throw around the word “Gotham” without irony. As for where it stands in the marketplace, the Chatwal is envisioned as a “baby grand” hotel, one with a smaller footprint and perhaps less lofty ambitions than the big names lining Central Park, but a luxury hotel none the less, if a slightly more modest one.

In this context the rooms make a lot of sense. Typically for New York, they’re not exactly sprawling, but they’re efficiently laid out, with plenty of comfort packed into a small space. The suites, by contrast, spread out quite a lot — if you’re in this bracket of travelers you’ll find the Chatwal grand indeed. Don’t miss the Lambs Club, the Chatwal’s restaurant and lounge. Named for the professional theater actors’ club which once called this building home, it’s another faithful reconstruction of a prewar classic — you’ll be pining for the old days in no time.

The Spa

With an October 2010 opening, Spa Chatwal’s 2,400 square foot facility surpasses the ordinary, joining forces with Kashwere, a leading brand that provides luxury products for spas and hotels. It’s no wonder Oprah is a Kashwere fanatic, with amenities such as 5 different types of robes to choose among. Embrace the luxury feel the moment you walk into the spa, where a concierge awaits to escort you to a private changing room, diminishing the usual locker room feel. A different approach to ultimate relaxation, try the ‘Moonstones Massage,’ a combination of alternatively placed warm stones to release deep tension and cool marble to stimulate the senses.
