The Palais is named for its original occupant, the Grand Vizier of Jamaï, and the original palace building dates back to 1879. It became a hotel in the Thirties, and a new wing, much larger than the original palace, was constructed in the Seventies — but in a style remarkably comparable to that of the original “pleasure pavilion” building.

Fez is arguably the cultural capital of Morocco (and has at times been the political capital as well), and the Palais is its most exclusive and sophisticated hotel. Though every inch a modern luxury hotel, the Palais Jamaï has the look of an old-fashioned Moorish palace, with its dramatic columned atrium and the intricate detailing that ornaments seemingly every surface. The rooftop pool is gorgeous, as are the fountains and terraced gardens that surround the hotel.

Al Fassia, the original restaurant, is as old as the Palais itself, a traditionally Moroccan establishment, complete with Andalou orchestra and belly dancing. There are two more casual restaurants and an English-flavored jazz bar off the lobby. And just outside, a stone's throw from the hotel, is the Medina of Old Fez, the busiest in Morocco, packed with markets, restaurants, and mosques, where the streets resonate with the call of the muezzin. Guides can be arranged by the hotel.
