With over twenty beaches and a global reputation bolstered by a vacationing Brigitte Bardot’s famous love affair with the place, the Brazilian peninsula of Buzios isn’t exactly a secret hideaway. But it’s far enough (160 kilometers) from the madness of the Rio resort scene to provide some respite from the head-spinning crowds that flock to those beaches. The 37-room Serena Boutique Resort takes advantage of the exclusivity of its Geriba Beach location, at the peninsula’s narrowest point, offering a refreshingly sophisticated, modernist take on laid-back beachfront living.
Serena’s designers have intermingled plenty of urban loft-style accents with the welcome tropical airiness of the guest rooms. White walls and uncomplicated furnishings give way to peaceful outdoor spaces, with balconies on the upper floors and gardens on the ground. Bathrooms are right-angled and crisp, with private external jacuzzis enhancing the loft suites. Flatscreen TVs and wireless internet are part of the package, while at the higher end, apartment-style accommodations boast fully equipped kitchens.
The restaurant serves a fairly eclectic mixture of international and local dishes with a decidedly gourmet focus. Daytime hours are most likely spent on the beach, or sipping a drink from the poolside bar. It’s a fine option for a romantic getaway, but it’s got more to offer than just swanky seclusion: Serena shows off its family-friendly side by offering a range of fitness tours, surfing lessons, golf excursions, and even babysitters, giving parents some free time for that poolside drink.
