It’s sort of a wonder the Greeks ever got around to inventing Western civilization. The islands especially, both major and minor, seem purpose-built for idleness, and that’s true of the western island of Lefkada, no less than anywhere else. Less party-oriented than Mykonos, less sublimely alien than Santorini, this is an island of tranquil charms, of mountain views, of forested hillsides, Homeric landscapes and Ionian seascapes — and this, of course, is where you’ll find San Nicolas Resort, a boutique hotel in a light and cosmopolitan contemporary style.

Rooms come with terraces, the better to take in the sights, and the neutral-toned look is a welcome contrast with the seemingly mandatory blue-and-white Cycladic color scheme. The hillside pool deck, with its 25-meter pool, is the hotel’s daytime heart, and into the evening as well, its pool bar serving drinks with a view. There’s another bar inside the hotel, as well as a Mediterranean restaurant, and many more around Lefkada town. Lefkada, it should be said, is a bit more accessible than some of the other islands, connected via bridge to the Greek mainland (one short enough to walk across, should the mood take you), making it a destination for day-trippers and travelers alike.

San Nicolas Resort is approximately 2 hours by car from Ioannina Airport and 40 minutes from Preveza/Lefkas Airport. Flights from Athens to Ioannina Airport are approximately 1 hour and run daily.
