Riad Farnatchi

Derb el Farnatchi, Rue Souk el Fassis

Marrakech, Morocco

Style: Modern Design

Atmosphere: Quiet

9 Rooms

The prevailing trend in Marrakech is toward riad hotels, walled-courtyard houses deep in the medina where guests hide out from the crowds and experience traditional Moroccan city living. Riad Farnatchi adds to Marrakech’s collection of upmarket riad boutiques, but with a twist — this is riad style made modern, a 21st-century re-imagining of the centuries-old standard.

Impeccable interiors are to be expected — Riad Farnatchi is the brainchild of Jonathan Wix, the English hotelier behind the Scotsman in Edinburgh and La Tremoille in Paris. Conceived as a private residence, it’s cobbled together from three medina houses, and divided into just five suites, each individually decorated in a sumptuous style that’s completely modern yet recognizably Moroccan through and through.

The suites are spacious, the furnishings sleek and swanky interpretations of North African styles, and comforts abound, from musts like satellite television and central air conditioning to thoughtful extras like stereo systems and complimentary robes and slippers. The hammam is open for guest use in the evenings, and downstairs, quite surprisingly, is an indoor pool, complete with a jet stream for resistance swimming.

There’s a rooftop terrace with views over the rooftops of the old city, and a number of small patios and sitting rooms are scattered throughout the property. The hotel’s kitchen serves a highly authentic Moroccan cuisine with a menu that’s tailored to your preferences, and meals can be taken in the dining room, in one of the sitting areas, or in the privacy of your suite.
