Reina Roja Hotel
Calle 20 entre Av. 5 y Av. 10 Centro
Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, Mexico
Style: Cutting-Edge
Atmosphere: Happening
63 Rooms
With a location this close to Playa del Carmen’s main drag, Reina Roja wouldn’t get far with subtlety. The mesh-lined cages and neon red lights put to rest any element of shyness. If spending your days frolicking in the foamy surf and your nights in a bar bathed in darkness and red light produces too much mental dissonance, then you might want to keep looking. Quinta Avenida boasts plenty of tamer properties.
The whole pleasure-palace vibe is more than just a gimmick, and there are more moods than simply “inferno” — the hotel’s green roof is more Garden of Earthly Delights, complete with a gorgeous rooftop pool, from which you can drink tequila while admiring the island of Cozumel and the Caribbean Sea. There’s another bar in the lobby, with a skateboard-covered DJ booth. Some rooms pursue individual themes, right down to the choice of materials — leather, rubber, et cetera. All are well-proportioned and well-appointed, most with big beds, terraces, and red accents.
For spa treatments and waterfront access, you’ll have to step off-site. Naturally, the staff will gladly arrange such excursions, as well as those to golf, snorkel, or visit the decaying monuments to power and grandeur nearby. No doubt the ancient Maya would barely recognize their land nowadays, although, frankly, such emphasis on pleasure transcends time and space.
How to get there:
