It’s a tribute to the vision of the hoteliers of the world that they are capable of putting a destination on the map all at once, as was the case with Phuket a couple of decades ago. But it’s another sort of tribute to the resourcefulness of the hoteliers of the world that they can find ways to reinvent these destinations, year after year — as is the case with Phuket today, where resorts like Paresa still manage to make Phuket feel new.

All it takes is a strong sense of hospitality, a stunning piece of land, and a bit of old island romance. But you’d be surprised what a tall order that can be. Here the rooms are big, and the suites and villas even bigger, the last fully equipped with kitchens and the whole nine residential yards. You could do a lot worse if it’s views of the Andaman Sea you’re after, especially from the cliff suites, which are exactly what they sound like. And no luxury is spared: many rooms have private steam rooms, and almost all of them have private infinity-edge plunge pools.

There’s a full-service spa, and an Italian restaurant alongside a traditional Thai option, as well as shuttle service to the Kamala town center for when luxurious solitude grows tiring — although be aware, that’s not actually guaranteed to happen.
