There are plenty of places to go in India if you want to be treated like royalty, but when it comes to eco-luxury, options are a bit thin on the ground. Inevitably, though, a country of India’s size is going to contain a little bit of everything, and here, a half-day’s drive from Bangalore, on the banks of the wide and gentle Kabini River, there’s a place where you can get good and lost, in high style: Orange County Kabini.

At first glance Orange County Kabini is almost impossibly rustic, but on closer inspection the villas’ traditional thatched-roof construction conceals some pretty luxurious accommodations. They’re all laid out around small central courtyards, some containing jacuzzis, others plunge pools, and they’re air conditioned, even if enormous plasma screens aren’t exactly on the agenda — nor any televisions at all, for that matter.

The point is to unplug a bit: take a nature walk, ride down the Kabini in a coracle, the local fishermen’s watercraft, or do some birdwatching. For a slightly more ambitious trip there are safaris, by jeep and by motorboat, and the resort’s elephant is available for some one-on-one quality time. Meanwhile back at the resort there’s an Ayurvedic spa, as well as a pair of restaurants, including one serving local kebabs and grilled dishes with a view of the river.
