Malibu’s Carbon Beach is probably better known by its nickname, Billionaire’s Beach. The pristine stretch of southern California coastline is prime real-estate for movie stars and rich-enough-to-own-an-island moguls, with small plots of beachfront real estate hitting eight-figure prices. Unless you’ve got famous friends, your Billionaire’s Beach experience probably involves one of several very fine luxury hotels. And with its central location and private beach, the Malibu Beach Inn fits squarely among the top tier of these boutiques.
There’s a SoCal urban freshness to the guest rooms (more akin to the upscale elegance of Santa Monica than the hip seediness of Venice Beach), but each room’s private balcony overlooking the ocean banishes any thoughts of crowds and smog. The look doesn’t change much from room to room — cream-colored walls and furniture in tasteful shades of brown — but with the private beach just outside, there’s not much pressure to sass up the aesthetic with avant-garde decorative twists. The artwork is primarily ocean-oriented, with local artist Glenn Ness’s paintings of pools and waterfront scenes adding to the atmosphere rather than distracting.
This attitude extends to the public spaces as well: the hotel’s Carbon Beach Club restaurant offers al fresco dining on the beach, unless crowds or inclement weather force you inside to the bright, cheerful interior. At this hotel, where even the meeting rooms overlook the water (good luck accomplishing anything), it can actually be hard to escape the ocean. You can always take refuge at the spa, where the drawn curtains offer a bit of respite to focus on inner beauty — the beach will always be there when you’re done.
How to get there:
Malibu Beach Inn is approximately a 35-minute drive from Los Angeles International Airport. Valet parking is available for $23 USD per night.
