Conservatism casts a long shadow in the world of Paris hospitality, and the best boutique hotels seem to find compelling and original methods of reacting against tradition without indulging in some sneering postmodern wackiness. Step inside the lobby of the Madison Hotel, and you’ll see how it’s done: the eye-popping palette of reds and creams, the swooping curves of the main desk, the very stately grandfather clock presiding over the whole scene. It’s as if Louis XIV had a nip of absinthe and tried his hand at boutique hotel design.

Madison Hotel’s fifty rooms adhere to an overall aesthetic — a kind of drawing-room sumptuousness, combined with a knowing, unpretentious brand of modernism — that gets tweaked throughout, so no two rooms are exactly the same. The standard hierarchy applies — single, double, deluxe, suite — and the difference is in the space, rather than the offerings (the single, though small, is perfect for the solitary business traveler). The unique headboards are especially striking, flat cushions that dangle from a golden drapery rod. And the charcoal-and-red bathrooms display a surprising level of ingenuity, considering they’re sleek tile-and-glass affairs.

Visit the perfectly serviceable, if a bit utilitarian, hotel bar for a sampling of Bordeaux wine or a cocktail. Breakfast is buffet-style, served in a magnificent breakfast room, and for lunch and dinner you’ll rely on the hotel’s unbeatable location.
