Lungarno Alberghi is the hotel division of Italy’s Ferragamo fashion dynasty—but while some fashion label hotels seem little more than marketing exercises, with the brand name splashed across every available surface, the Lungarno hotels deliberately downplay, even obscure, their connection with the venerable shoemaker. The facile thing to do would have been to upholster the rooms in brown leather, or display the season’s collections in the lobby—more difficult, and more rewarding, is the task of applying the label’s professionalism, quality control, and eye for detail to the hotel venture.

It’s paid off in spades; Florence was in dire need of some contemporary accommodations, and this little corner of town is home to three stylish little Lungarno hotels. Lungarno Suites is located just behind the more rakish Gallery Hotel Art, and looks across the Arno River at the slightly more traditional Lungarno Hotel. But what most sets the Suites apart is apparent from the name; rather than traditional hotel rooms, which in Florence lean toward the smallish side, these are fully serviced apartment-style suites, complete with kitchenettes and refrigerators. Space is plentiful—these are possibly the largest rooms in town, and the close proximity to its sister properties goes a long way to make up for the fact that Lungarno Suites has no restaurant or bar of its own.

Business travelers love the extra space, as well as the high-speed internet and portable workstations—and the space is a bonus for leisure travelers as well, especially families used to close quarters in poky Continental hotel rooms. The location is an ideal home base for exploring the city, and as for facilities, if the Lungarno Suites don’t have it, the Gallery Hotel Art or the Lungarno Hotel will. Or just have the concierge order a grocery delivery, and cook for yourself.
