Les Pléiades Hôtel Spa
21 Grande Rue
Barbizon, Ile de France, France
Style: Modern Design
Atmosphere: Lively
20 Rooms
Barbizon, nearly two centuries ago, was where the eponymous school of painters decamped to so that they might gain a greater understanding of France’s rural life. Today it’s rather the same situation, easels optional. Located thirty-odd miles south of Paris, at the edge of the Fontainebleu Forest, this is, for many an urban sophisticate, the gateway to the country life — a transition that’s eased considerably by the presence of a hotel on the order of Les Pléiades.
Many of them, it must be said, come primarily for dinner. That’s no reflection on the accommodations, of course, but a tribute to the Michelin-starred chef, Philippe Geneletti. Those who spend the night find the residential experience is very much the equal of the culinary one. The twenty rooms, suites and lofts are stylish and urbane, the décor crisp and contemporary; the square footage is the only clue you’re not in Paris.
And of course there’s the third star in Les Pléiades’ constellation, the spa, which completes the triad of temptation; if you won’t be enticed to make the drive down from Paris for a fine meal and an excellent room, perhaps a massage will seal the deal. From the buzz of the capital to a chair by the pool in an hour and change — it’s not hard to see the appeal.
