If you need a visual reference for what a fairytale Pyrenean chalet ought to look like, look no further than the stone exterior and gabled roof of La Pleta, in the northern Catalonian ski resort of Baqueira-Beret. We know Spain’s not the first country you think of when planning a slopeside outing, but with an on-site ski shop founded by one of Spain’s foremost downhill racers and spa treatments designed to soothe the muscles of aching skiers, La Pleta’s downhilling bona fides are very much in order.

While the exterior presents a fortress-like aspect, the interior allows the exposed wood and panoramic views to set the scene. The 67 guest rooms don’t overdo the ski-lodge signifiers, relying instead on cream walls and lively but unobtrusive furnishings to create an atmosphere of stylish comfort. In the larger suites, whirlpools are strategically placed beneath the windows of the sloping roof for maximum scenic appreciation. Bathrooms are tiled in local slate, creating a spa-like atmosphere that’s rounded out with Molton Brown bath products.

The spa proper offers everything from the aforementioned après-ski treatments to an eclectic menu of massages to Turkish baths, all experienced in a dreamy subterranean den, lit solely by candlelight. There are three restaurants, and guests who’d like to be reminded that they are, in fact, in Spain — if only by a few miles — should opt for Del Gel al Foc, which specializes in local Catalonian cuisine, followed by a nightcap of brandy in La Pleta’s cigar bar.
