Traveling to Trancoso on Brazil’s Bahian coast requires a bit more commitment than the old-style Brazilian beach vacation — it’s an hour’s drive from the nearest airport at Porto Seguro. So if you’ve already made the effort to escape the fun-in-the-sun overload that can make Rio or Sao Paulo seem a bit hectic, chances are you’re not looking for a sleek urban design hotel, but something more like Jacare do Brasil: a decidedly pastoral, intimate and laid-back variation on the “house-hotel” concept.
Located cliffside at the edge of the Quadrado, the town’s grassy center, Jacare do Brasil is composed of five self-contained houses, each with its own secluded outdoor space that offers a sweeping view of the ocean. The Sig Bergamin–designed interiors are varied in execution, but find commonality in the rich ochre that colors the floors and walls. Fully equipped indoor-outdoor kitchens and dining areas are serviced by a maid who pulls double duty as a private chef, cooking each guest breakfast upon request. The simple joy this kind of privacy affords really can’t be overstated; Jacare do Brasil is less like a hotel and more like a private sublet, albeit one with modern hotel amenities and a pleasantly unobtrusive staff available as needed.
If you’re in need of some diversion, Trancoso is a small town with charm to spare: take a short walk from the hotel to check out one of the afternoon soccer games, or sample local Bahian cuisine at the hotel’s partner restaurant, Cacau. And if your casa features a particularly eye-catching objet d’art or piece of furniture, don’t be shy about inquiring: the hotel’s owner, Fernando Droghetti, is one of Brazil’s foremost artisans, and the hotel doubles as a sort of concept store and gallery for his functional creations.
