Ibiza Rocks House at Pikes Hotel
P.O. Box 104, San Antonio de Portmany
Ibiza, Balearic Islands, Spain
Style: Traditional Elegance
Atmosphere: Lively
24 Rooms
Ibiza Rocks House at Pikes Hotel is closed from late Fall to early Spring.
Ibiza has been known lately for its constant stream of European club kids, but its slightly more grown-up side has been staging a resurgence. Ibiza Rocks House at Pikes has long been Ibiza's top hotel, though of course it's anything but stuffy. This is where visiting pop stars and well-paid club DJs stay, and the reception has the wall of fame to prove it, with signed glossies of everyone from Naomi Campbell to Julio Iglesias. Freddie Mercury famously rented the whole place for a birthday celebration, and the first Wham! video was filmed here, for what that's worth.
Even without all this celebrity baggage, it's easy to see why this hotel has been a success. Physically, it is more a compound than a building — a 15th-century farmhouse, to be exact, surrounded by villas, in the hills just outside San Antonio — and the décor is defiantly old-fashioned, with nothing Scandinavian*, minimal, or Zen about it. “Very old Spanish farmhouse,” in fact, paints quite an accurate picture.
Despite the rustic atmosphere, though, this is a modern hotel, with air conditioning, satellite television, and room service from 8am until midnight — though in the winter, the service is bed & breakfast only. Some rooms have kitchens, jacuzzis, or fireplaces, a pool, a gym, and tennis courts are available. More exotic activities such as diving or horseback riding can be arranged, but this being Ibiza, the nightlife will probably be the primary activity.
* - Not that we have anything against Scandinavian design, or Zen Buddhism for that matter.
