Hotel Paradies

Muglin 1

Ftan, Graubünden, Switzerland

Style: Contemporary Classic

Atmosphere: Secluded

23 Rooms

Like a lot of things in Switzerland, Hotel Paradies keeps one foot solidly planted in tradition. Hotel Paradies began life a century ago as an artist’s residence by the painter Hans Walter Bayer, and it doesn’t take a painter’s eye to discern the appeal of its location. It’s been allowed to evolve, however, and while the heritage of the place is still discernible, several rounds of very thorough renovations have introduced successive waves of modernist influence.

The result is a twenty-three-room luxury hotel in a stunning Alpine setting, packed with antique and mid-century furniture and a wealth of artworks by local makers. It’s a conservative look, perhaps, but quite suitable for a small hotel that bills itself as a “hideaway.” Here the visual focus is on the peaks, visible through every picture window, and on the other senses: furnishings are plush and overstuffed, fireplaces abound, and the kitchens make the most of Graubünden’s Italian influence.

In the winter months skiing is very much an option, and in the summer the variety of activities is almost overwhelming, from golf and tennis to biking, rafting and horseback riding. Then again there’s much to be said for staying in: down duvets, plush robes and spa-like bathrooms are easy on the nerves, and the hotel’s spa offers indulgence with a view, a reminder of why Switzerland’s name has long been a byword for rejuvenation.
