Québec City’s not all castles and ramparts, not by a long shot. Quite a bit of it, as in many other North American cities, is Sixties and Seventies office towers. And say what you will about office towers—certainly they’re not the most picturesque things in the world—but once you’re inside the Hotel PUR you can’t argue with the plentiful interior space, or with the sunlight that streams in through the full-length windows.
The look is minimalism as it was always meant to be: expanses of white focus the eye on the carefully chosen accents, and it manages to be calming and somewhat Zen without feeling dull. The in-room technology is right up to date, with iPod stereos and pervasive wi-fi, and the slightly futuristic bathrooms come stocked with Aveda products.
Most surprising of all is that they’ve seen fit to convert some of that plentiful space into a fairly extensive fitness center and sauna, with Quebec City’s largest indoor pool thrown in as a bonus. If there’s any down side at all, it’s that the PUR isn’t within walking distance of the sights of the old town — but then again, if that’s what you were after, this wouldn’t be the first place you’d try.
