Hotel Montefiore
36 Montefiore Street
Tel Aviv, Israel
Style: Traditional Elegance
Atmosphere: Secluded
12 Rooms
This Twenties mansion in the White City section of Tel Aviv has to be seen to be believed. Even as a building, irrespective of what’s inside, it’s impressive enough; it’s an authentic and well-preserved Twenties mansion in a hybrid Bauhaus-Ottoman style, a style that’s novel to those of us who aren’t Israeli architecture professors. It’s what’s inside, though, that’s most remarkable, at least for our purposes — the Montefiore is a modern twelve-room boutique hotel, combining the intimacy of a small guest house with the service philosophy of a high-end luxury hotel.
These are probably the twelve most in-demand rooms in all of Tel Aviv. A large part of the appeal is the Montefiore’s restaurant, a Vietnamese-influenced brasserie — the hotel’s owners are restaurateurs first, and it’s safe to say they haven’t quit their day job. But a great restaurant does not a great hotel make, at least not all by itself. The Montefiore’s service is genuinely friendly, with a can-do spirit that’s not exactly common in Israel — and it’s that, along with the effortlessly chic visual style, that keeps Tel Aviv’s beautiful people coming back.
What it’s not, in any meaningful sense, is a luxury hotel. If a pool or a spa or conference space for three hundred are among your hotel must-haves, then the Montefiore might not be a realistic option. But if your needs run more to a high-end guest house with a quality restaurant and warm, stylish atmosphere, then you’d be a fool to pass it up.
