Hotel Felix
Whitehouse Lane, Huntingdon Road
Cambridge, England, UK
Style: Modern Design
Atmosphere: Quiet
52 Rooms
Here on the edges of staid, sedate Cambridge, it is surprising indeed to find a bit of London boutique chic — all the more so for the fact that the main building is vintage Cambridge, a Victorian mansion built for a local surgeon in 1852.
The interiors are modern, minimal, in muted colors, with modern artworks and sleek furniture replacing the do-not-touch antiques one would expect from an English country hotel. And though every bit as stylish as its big-city cousins, Felix has the distinct advantage of space — these rooms are big, bright and airy, with impossibly plush king beds and as fine a set of pillows and linens as can be found anywhere this side of Egypt.
The bathrooms are spacious as well, in limestone or slate (it appears marble's fifteen minutes have expired) with high-tech fixtures — the showers emit a startling volume of water, and some two thousand years after the Romans, English plumbing has advanced to the point that hot and cold water now run from a single tap.
Graffiti, is a smartly designed restaurant overlooking the terrace and the gardens serving modern British cuisine. This is, by some accounts, the best food in Cambridge, and it had better be — Hotel Felix's only drawback is that it's not quite walking distance from Cambridge's pedestrian-friendly downtown. For sightseeing and leisure, take a taxi into town, or hire a bike from the hotel — but for dinner, take advantage of Graffiti.
How to get there:
Hotel Felix is approximately a 1 1/2 hour drive from central London.
