America’s wealth of disused and neglected modernist hotels and motels is a resource we’d like to see put to better use. So the Hotel Angeleno comes as a nice surprise. This cylindrical tower on the West Side was a Holiday Inn, from that middlebrow chain’s Sixties tower period — today, though, after what must have been a herculean renovation, it’s proof that in the right hands it’s a small difference indeed between hopelessly dated and charmingly retro.
The clean lines and rich earthy tones look perfectly at ease in the LA sunshine, lending some grown-up gravity to this whimsical round building, and the typically friendly and attentive service doesn’t hurt either. Feather duvets, pillow-top mattresses and Italian linens whose threads are worth counting remove any doubt that this hotel has left its motel roots behind.
One thing that does remain is the location. Overlooking the 405 freeway, it could be more scenic, but in the land of the automobile, driving convenience is king — and the Angeleno’s location puts it within easy range of Santa Monica, Beverly Hills and the UCLA campus. Windows are soundproofed, and some rooms face the Getty Center, a welcome distraction. In the best rooms, above the 11th floor, views of the LA skyline, Santa Monica Hills or the Pacific make that freeway look farther and farther away.
If you’re not driving, the hotel’s car service is available for trips within the immediate area, and West, the top-floor restaurant serving classic American and contemporary California cuisine, is just an elevator ride away.
How to get there:
Hotel Angeleno is a 20-minute drive from Los Angeles International Airport but the trip can take over an hour depending on traffic. Valet parking is complimentary for guests.

Restaurant on top floor had great views
What the hotel could do better:
Food at the restaurant was incredibly overpriced.
Made a couple of requests to the front desk. They acted like they could have cared less.

What I liked:
Restaurant and restauranteur were amazing. Gave us a real VIP treatment. The pool and pool area is nice and kept well. Free wine hour was a lovely touch. Free valet was handy also.
What the hotel could do better:
More organised check in. Better air conditioning as current in room systems are old and loud. Better sound proofing from highway.
