Parisian luxury hotels are well known for their historical bent, but when measured against the Hôtel de Crillon, the rest of them are practically brand new. This massive stone edifice at the end of the Place de la Concorde has been a luxury hotel since before the Revolution, and can honestly claim just about everyone from Marie Antoinette to Madonna and beyond on its yards-long list of notable guests.
What’s perhaps more impressive than the Crillon’s sheer longevity is the fact that they’ve managed to keep it pretty much at the top of its game for all these years. In some ways it embodies all the Parisian luxury-hotel stereotypes: classically professional service, a buttoned-up, formal atmosphere, and serious, even monumental architecture, dressed up in florid Louis XV pomp from top to bottom. Ambitious, to be sure, but all the more impressive for the fact that it actually works; it’s upscale yet never alienating, thoroughly upscale yet never forgetting that a hotel, however high-end, is in the business of welcoming, rather than excluding.
The services are comprehensive, but the jewel in the Crillon’s crown is Les Ambassadeurs, the two-Michelin-star gastronomic restaurant that occupies the palace’s opulent old ballroom. Rather than wishful thinking, the name is, if anything, slightly understated — with a clientele like the Crillon’s, the ambassadors are probably lucky to get the second-best table.
