Hôtel Notre Dame
1 quai Saint-Michel
Paris, France
Neighborhood: 5th Arr. (Quartier Latin)
Style: Cutting-Edge
Atmosphere: Lively
26 Rooms
Christian Lacroix’s name pops up in all sorts of places these days, but in the case of the Hôtel Notre Dame, the Parisian designer gets to play the role of the hometown hero. Here, practically in the shadow of the Notre Dame cathedral (and literally in its shadow, a few mornings a year), a 400-year-old building has been thoroughly — but not too thoroughly — restored, beginning a new life as a very stylish 26-room boutique hotel.
The view’s the thing. Some rooms face inward, but the better ones look out over the cathedral — the hotel’s riverside position means there’s nothing at all to disturb the lines of sight. But even on the inner courtyard, your eye won’t be starved for stimulation, as Christian Lacroix throws two fingers up to the minimalists, or however many fingers is the rude number in France. His interiors are a retro-modern fantasy, full of references to Roman paving stones, the Notre Dame’s namesake cathedral, France’s tradition of high-luxe Versailles-style opulence, even a bit of Seventies wood-paneled late modernism — basically everything except white-on-white urban-Zen design hotels.
To say it’s a feast for the eyes is perhaps a cliché, but a visual experience so rich, in a city that’s not exactly hurting for stunning views, is something worth remarking upon. And while there’s no restaurant, and at some point the rest of you will need a more literal sort of feast, your river’s-edge Latin-quarter location places all the best of Paris at your feet.
