From a traveler’s perspective, Marrakech is in some ways a tale of two cities: there’s the old medina, with its winding streets, its market stalls and traditional riad houses; and there’s the Palmeraïe, the palm grove on the outskirts, a loose network of resorts, better suited to golfers and anyone else who prefers expansive open spaces to crowded, narrow streets. This latter is the setting for Les 5 Djellabas, a boutique resort comprising ten African-style villas, set amid palms and gardens, with the snow-capped peaks of the Atlas mountains for an archetypal Palmeraïe backdrop.

The ten villas are newly built, and mix clean-lined contemporary design with traditional Moroccan craftsmanship and a bit of sub-Saharan influence. They’re spacious and exceedingly comfortable, but never wasteful — though the setting isn’t exactly wild, the philosophy is one of “eco-luxury,” with an emphasis on natural materials and a dedication to sensible water management that’s reassuring in the midst of some of the world’s most extensive man-made gardens. Here you’re close enough to the city center to partake in its charms on a daily basis, yet remote enough to fully disconnect at day’s end. And while the scale is intimate — just a pool on site — you’re close to any number of golf courses, day spas, and more elaborate diversions, should the mood strike.

How to get there:
Hotel Les 5 Djellabas is located on the Bab Atlas site, in the Marrakech Palmeraie (Palm Grove), 25 minutes from Jema El Fna Square and 30 minutes from the airport. You can get to the hotel by taking the Fez road, at the second roundabout in the direction of Bab Atlas, then signposts indicate the road to follow.
