Hôtel Dar Rhizlane
Avenue Jnan El Harti, Hivernage
Marrakech, Morocco
Style: Contemporary Classic
Atmosphere: Lively
19 Rooms
While most of Marrakech’s best hotel options lie inside the medina or way out in the palmeraïe, it’s by no means a universal rule. Dar Rhizlane, for example, is in the Hivernage quarter, an upscale residential district just outside the winding alleys of the old town. And while a purist might object that the textbook Marrakech fantasy is only available from within the walls of a traditional riad, Dar Rhizlane begs to differ — there’s enough Moorish romance here to satisfy anyone’s craving, and the location affords this mini-palace some room to properly spread its wings.
Some of that spaciousness, it must be said, is due to the fact that it’s a relatively new build, erected by the local architect Charles Boccara and intended as a private residence. Thus is avoided the inevitable sameness of a typical hotel’s double-loaded corridors and identical bedrooms. The rooms and suites mix southern Moroccan traditions with colonial influences and a contemporary sheen, and the result is quite unique, something that can’t be said for all the sprawling estates of the palmeraïe or the infinity of riads in the medina. Best, perhaps, for a bit of escape, a dose of swank seclusion just outside the town center.
