Just when we were beginning to wonder if anyone even visits Thailand’s cities anymore — when was the last time you heard of someone going to Bangkok unless on the way to some beachfront island paradise? — the Dusit hotel group has gone and answered our question with the launch of a new brand.

The flagship DusitD2 Chiang Mai hotel is a departure from what we’ve come to expect from Thailand, and especially from Chiang Mai. It’s decidedly urban, located right by the Night Bazaar, and close to any number of cafés, bars and restaurants. But unlike the stately pleasure palaces or the towering business hotels this one has some youthful spring in its step — the design is modern, bright, even fun, and the service, though not unprofessional, is youthful as well: staffers wear dressed-down stylish uniforms atop Converse All-Stars.

Decadent it’s not — if anything, the DusitD2 Chiang Mai is for travelers who could perhaps afford to splash out a little bigger, but who aren’t after the haute luxury of places like the Chedi or the Mandarin. There’s a spa, for those in need of unwinding, and a top-floor fitness center with views out over the city. More popular, though, are the Mix bar and the Moxie restaurant, both stylish modern spaces and both typically full of Chiang Mai locals.
