Mexico’s second-largest city tends to go about its business rather quietly, so the fact that Guadalajara has been cornering the market on cutting-edge yet soulful design hotels isn’t exactly common knowledge. However, the recent addition of Del Carmen Concept Hotel can’t help but raise the city’s profile. Del Carmen is a lovingly planned and artfully executed boutique, a throwback to a time when the label “art hotel” evoked a tradition of fine art rather than a clash of inexplicable decorations.

The hotel is housed inside a restored 19th-century hacienda, but the neo-classical vibe begins and ends with the façade. Inside, the nine guest rooms are thoughtful, color-splashed hideaways, each one dedicated to the spirit of a different Mexican surrealist. Instead of going for that inside-the-painting feel, the designers of Del Carmen opt for a more immersive inside-the-artist’s-head aesthetic. As you might imagine, things get charmingly weird. The Gunther Gerszo room features movie set lights as bedside lamps, while the mysteries of Remedios Varo are illuminated — or obscured — by twin round mirrors and fragmented brickwork.

The public spaces at the hotel are just that, hosting an eclectic mixture of locals and tourists. The restaurant (dedicated to Frida Kahlo) is large enough to accommodate more people than the all the guest rooms combined, and the bar doubles as a library. If you see something you can’t bear to part with after your stay, don’t worry — everything from the dressers on down to the pillows is for sale.
