Das Kranzbach Hotel & Wellness Retreat
Kranzbach 1
Kranzbach (near Garmisch-Partenkirchen) , Bavaria, Germany
Style: Modern Design
Atmosphere: Quiet
107 Rooms
Don’t call it a ski resort. Das Kranzbach may be located an hour from Munich in the shadow of some of the most imposing peaks of the Bavarian Alps, but it’s not about rowdy tourists shedding their cold-weather gear in the hallways. This is a four-season wellness retreat, and while you can certainly take advantage of the region’s ample winter sports opportunities, the spa at Das Kranzbach offers much more than the average après-ski soak.
The original manor house was built by a young British aristocrat, who commissioned a decidedly English country retreat; to this day, it’s one of Bavaria’s most distinctive architectural anomalies. Recent years have seen the addition of a sixty-room annex, offering guests the choice of two very different experiences. Guest rooms in the main house feature chic mod-inspired furniture and some fairly bold choices in décor — clusters of hanging spherical lamps and color juxtapositions that, in theory, should clash, but somehow don’t. The newer rooms, with a crisp wood-and-glass motif, are a bit more conservative without being any less contemporary; modern Bavarian isn’t so very different in sensibility from modern Scandinavian.
The food is never-ending, with a gourmet breakfast, lunch buffet, tea and cakes at mid-afternoon, and a five-course dinner menu. Of course, the spa is the crown jewel of the hotel, and it’s extensive: five pools, a half-dozen saunas and steam baths, and special treatments for expecting parents. Wellness is a concept that’s taken perhaps more seriously here, and it seems virtually impossible that one should manage to leave Das Kranzbach without feeling the difference.
