Dar Nanka & Spa

Maybe it’s the influence of the famous markets, but all too often a boutique hotel in Marrakech ends up a muddle of tchotchkes and tapestries, looking like some globe-trotting hoarder’s storeroom. Not so at the delightful eight-room Dar Nanka, on the city’s peaceful outskirts. Here the designers have stuck to their task, and while there’s no end of local color, the hotel’s clean and clear aesthetic is never disturbed.

For such a tiny place, Dar Nanka offers some surprising amenities: clay tennis courts, a 4,000 square-foot spa, a salt water pool, multi-day cooking courses and stylist-led makeover programs. The setting, too, which trades the bustle of the city center for views of the Atlas mountains and gardens full of olive trees and roses, sets Dar Nanka apart from the typical pint-sized riad. And along with the abundance of sunlight, Dar Nanka holds plenty of shady alcoves, curtains that seem made for billowing, skylights and gleaming surfaces that turn the sun to the hotel’s advantage rather than treating it as an outright adversary.

The guest rooms have plenty of ways to call you back, too. Many of them have fireplaces and private terraces, while the Pavillion offers its own plunge-pool and solarium. Then there’s the Master Room which, along with the aforementioned fireplace and terrace, includes its own jacuzzi. For all the furnishings and amenities, maybe it’s a typical afternoon snack that sums this place up best: a silver platter of mint tea and fresh apricots. Not a decadent feast, not a riot of flavors, but sitting at a perfectly set outdoor table, shaded from the heat of the day by a stand of olive trees, you could hardly want for more.
