High in the Dolomites, in the most northerly reaches of the Veneto, is the town of Cortina d’Ampezzo, one of northern Italy’s classic alpine towns. This, of course, is the part of Italy that looks the least like Italy — in fact when tourism here first started to take off, it was part of Austria. This is where the 1956 Winter Olympics were held, and where the 1944 games were scheduled to have been played. And today it’s an upscale Alpine resort the way only the Italians can do it — with half a Golden Quadrangle’s worth of luxury retail right at the heart of the village.
The Cristallo Hotel Spa & Golf is the jewel in Cortina’s crown. It’s perfectly placed, high on a hillside, to absorb the panoramic views of the peaks that ring the valley. And inside it’s a journey back in time. The interiors and furnishings, far from any Alpine cliché, are Gustavian in style, a Swedish import from a bygone century. All mod cons are present, but not ostentatiously so. The restaurants walk the fine line between alpine-rustic and fine-dining, and you can probably tell from the hotel’s name that they’re proud of their spa. And it’s not all just winter-wonderland stuff — Cortina is as pleasant in the summer as in the winter, especially for fans of the Scottish game.
