As a holiday destination, Belize is still very much in the honeymoon phase. By which we mean not that it’s just for honeymooners — though it would certainly be suitable — but that the inevitable development frenzy is not yet in full swing. Right now it’s enough for a hotel simply to claim an outstanding plot of land — of which there are apparently many — and assiduously avoid ruining it. Chabil Mar accomplishes exactly that, and in high style indeed.
The location, just outside of the town of Placencia, is more or less perfect as it is. Chabil Mar occupies a hundred-yard stretch of gorgeous white sand at the end of the Placencia peninsula, with a lagoon on one side and one of the world’s most extraordinary barrier reefs on the other. The diving, needless to say, is world-class, and the lounging on the beach is of equally fine quality.
So too are the accommodations. No new ground is broken, no paradigms are shattered — the villas are spacious, comfortable, possessed of a certain rustic elegance, and the fact that they all face directly onto the Caribbean doesn’t hurt either. You’ll spend days swimming, sailing, diving, fishing or venturing inland to explore the ancient Mayan ruins, and not once will it occur to you that Chabil Mar could be anything more or less than what it is.

What I liked:
I liked the location and that it was right on the beach. I liked the room, it was cozy and comfortable. I would have liked a king bed and our TV didn't work properly.
What the hotel could do better:
Nothing, had a wonderful stay!
