It’s becoming a bit of a theme here: if you go to the Nordic countries expecting a mid-century Scandinavian modernist style, you’ll come away quite puzzled indeed. The Guldsmeden hotels are a fine example of modern Copenhagen’s eclectic stylistic palette, and just west of the city center the Bertrams Hotel Guldsmeden, probably the most upscale one in the family, shows off a slightly unexpected Balinese influence in its carefully crafted interiors.

This is in addition to a very healthy dose of what the Danish call hyggeligt, a sort of cozy tranquility, achieved through an emphasis on the timeless and the rustic rather than the stark and the graphic. The Bertrams is a restored townhouse, and its slightly irrational plan only adds to the place’s character. And while you’ll have flat screens and down duvets, the luxuries are handled with a light touch, never breaking the cozy spell.

The location, in Vesterbro, just outside the gates of the old city, places you in one of Copenhagen’s most livable neighborhoods, and not far from the traditional tourist destinations. Of special note is the cuisine — there’s a very creditable organic/local movement sweeping the Danish capital — and the bar, serving drinks in the Bertram’s delightful little courtyard garden.
