In the time since Tablet went online we’ve seen Buenos Aires boom; at the turn of the millennium there were some fine hotels, to be sure, but a decade later it’s one of the boutique-hotel capitals of the world. It’s got big ones, small ones, funky ones, refined ones, and the general level is remarkably high. And it’s on the sophisticated, more sedate end of things that you’ll find Atempo Design Hotel.

The location, naturally, is Palermo, the upscale arts district that, if the hotel world is your focus, can easily overshadow the rest of the city. In particular it’s gallery- and boutique-rich northern end of the neighborhood, the so-called Palermo Hollywood, which, though it shouldn’t be taken too literally, certainly accounts for some of Atempo’s clean-lined, grown-up modernism.

Accommodations come in two flavors: the suites are studio-style, open-plan, with balconies; the lofts, by contrast, span two floors, and come with dining rooms and full kitchens. A funky little hole-in-the-wall Atempo certainly isn’t. Add a pocket-sized pool, a sauna and jacuzzi, and a swanky little bar and winter garden where you’ll rub elbows with art dealers and fashion buyers, and it’s a surprisingly complete little package: a chic pied à terre for when a luxury hotel is just too much bother.
